The Holy Eucharist, or Mass, is the heart of the life and work of this Christian community. Sunday by Sunday we come together to hear and proclaim the word of God, and to give thanks together over gifts of bread and wine for God's goodness in all of creation. In common with Christians of every age, we remember God's saving acts in the past, especially in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. We proclaim Christ's liberating presence among us now, and we look forward in hope to the coming of God's Kingdom of justice and peace on earth.
As we share the spiritual food and drink of new and unending life in Christ , our union with him and one another is strengthened, and we are given a foretaste of the heavenly banquet that awaits us in his reign.
Our celebration is characterized by joy. It is rich and sensuous, with colorful vestments and hangings, with music, candles and incense. It is a tribute to the God who makes the sights and sounds of nature with its changing seasons and fragrances, and who creates and redeems our bodies as well as our minds and spirits. Our worship is carefully reverent and we are not without a certain awe as we encounter those great saving acts through which God has entered and redeemed our world. At the same time, we are at ease in our family home, and our reverence is joined with a kind of relaxed enjoyment of the feast prepared for us. The inequalities that exist in the world are pushed aside, and everybody is welcome. No one need feel out of place here, or worry much about not "doing the right thing." There is no "dress code", no one will be embarrassed by being singled out, and you do not have to be an Episcopalian to share the Holy Communion.
Our worship begins but does not end in the church building. At the end of Mass we are sent out into the world to do the work God has given us to do -- the work of prayer, service, and witness in all aspects of our daily life and labor. In all our efforts to reflect God's love and justice in our families, relationships, workplaces, and communities, we carry on the work of worship.
